a minor triumph

Jay said he missed the play controls in my latest video, so I have
finally =
figured out a solution. I had taken them out because having
them in the SWF=
file seems to force the entire SWF file to load before
the viewer can see =
anything at all, even if the video is supposed to
AutoPlay. The control-les=
s videos would start playing as soon as you
open the web page, even though =
they might stutter for lack of bandwidth.

Now, instead of putting the play=
controls in the SWF file, I used
DreamWeaver's built-in JavaScript control=
s (and some very home-made
graphics for the buttons). I don't know anything=
about JavaScript, but
it was easy enough to figure out (I'll do step by st=
ep instructions
later).

This seems to have resolved the blank video proble=
m – you now see the
first frame of the video immediately, though it won't s=
tart playing
til you click Play. You can also Stop and Rewind. I suppose it=
would
still be subject to stuttering if the bandwidth isn't enough.

The n=
ew catch is that the buttons don't work in Firefox, but
everything works as=
expected in Internet Explorer…
